EMDR Therapy
When you experience a trauma, the way in which you process information in your brain gets blocked causing events to get locked in your brain with certain pictures, thoughts, or feelings. Your brain gets flooded and stores the memory improperly. Later, when we're reminded of that traumatic event or something similar occurs, all of those pictures, thoughts, or feelings can pop back up and we might react the way we did to the original trauma even if it's not happening anymore. That's what we mean when we say something "triggered" us. EMDR Therapy can help give our brain a way to reprocess the memory to give us relief from those triggering symptoms.

What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy used to treat shock trauma and complex trauma (click here to learn more about these types of trauma).
EMDR is a healing journey that helps us revisit old memories that are tied to our current issues or symptoms. Using bilateral stimulation (stimulating both sides of our brain using simple movements), we can help resolve some of the negative feelings, beliefs, and distress associated with past events.
Complex Trauma and EMDR
Maybe you haven't experiencing one big traumatic event but throughout your life you've experienced trauma through your relationships with your parents, friends, bad breakups, etc. A lot of the times, what can be most distressing is what the trauma we've experienced makes us believe about ourselves. Maybe after a traumatic breakup, we start believing we're not good enough. EMDR can help you reprocess trauma in a way that can make the traumatic event itself less distressing so it's no longer as triggering. It can also help you work through the negative belief attached to the trauma, i.e. "i'm not good enough" so you can improve your self-esteem and feel more like the you that you've always wanted to be or the person you were before the world and other people let you down.
